Welcome to Week 7 of the Web Quest - the end is nigh!
This week we will explore video sharing thorugh one of the most popular sites, YouTube.
A Video Hosting/Sharing Site allows you to upload digital videos from your camera or PC onto their Internet site. You can then share the videos by making them public or sharing the URL link to the video. Some sites also allow you to embedd the video directly into other accounts you have, like your blog or delicious page. Youtube is afree site that allows you to watch, upload, organize and share video clips just with friends or the whole Web.
www.YouTube.com
History: Launched 2005, bought by Google in 2006, 21 localised versions, has been banned in several countries (Tunisia, Thailand, Iran, turkey, Pakistan, UAE).
Example of: media/file sharing, social book-marking
Number of users: Jan 2008 79 millions users watched 3 billion videos (3.75 million channels available)
Why use: Free, quick set up, good security/privacy settings, good search features
Good for: education content viewing and uploading, getting feedback, finding global audience, obscure subject coverage.
Bad for: lots of rubbish videos, limited video quality (although getting better), copyright violations, assumes previous experience of media sharing/downloading/tagging.
